Why this petition matters

Started by Victoria Salter

At the moment, 77 billion innocent land animals are sent to slaughter every year, and trillions of fish and other marine animals are killed in the fishing industry every year. The poor pigs, cattle, sheep, goats, chickens, ducks, turkeys and geese who are tragically sent to slaughter are electrically stunned, lowered into gas chambers (where they scream in pain as they are burned on the inside), shot in the head, hoisted up, hung upside down and have their throats brutally cut.
You don’t need to be a moral philosopher to understand that killing a living, sentient creature who wanted to live for a meal or a snack, when you have plenty of other options, is morally wrong.

The use of land by animal agriculture, the greenhouse gases produced by animal agriculture and the terrible destruction of the rainforests for land for rearing animals and growing crops for their feed is also despicable. Far animals, including wildlife as well as farmed animals, are killed for “food” than are killed by the fur industry or possibly even the plastic crisis.

Also, factory farms make perfect breeding grounds for diseases. COVID-19, SARS, Swine Flu, Bird Flu and Max Cow Disease all came about and/or were exacerbated by humankind’s consumption of animals and their products, and the demand for these products.

If most of the western population adopted a whole-foods-based, vegan diet, we could probably vastly reduce the number of deaths due to heart disease and perhaps even some cancers. It could also vastly reduce death rates. Such a diet could also be promoted by the UK Government, saving many, many human lives, and also improving many human lives, as well as sparing the slaughter and suffering of billions of animals.

This ban should come in to effect as soon as possible, but, if a cut-off date for the ban to come into effect would be needed, it would be great if animal agriculture (with the exception of the use of animals for humane and ethical lab-grown meat) and the slaughter of animals could come into effect by 2040 at the latest.

Enough is enough. We need to save the animals, the people and the planet by banning animal slaughter and cruel animal agriculture as soon as possible!
