The Issue
On April Sixteenth, a series of anti-misogynistic and pro-feminist posters were hung up around the school halls during the assembly. The posters have since been removed and discarded, when many students have expressed their support for their project verbally and online. The Cleveland administration has implied that because the student that created and hung up the posters did not have support for their actions by all the girls in the school (700+ people), that their actions were against the schools rules and wrong.
We, as a small group of students from Cleveland, want to offer this petition as a platform for support for the movement as well as a space for people to critique and discuss the problems we have with the school climate, especially around issues of misogyny and performative allyship. It's never ok to censor activism pertaining to the safety and comfort of others, especially when it pertains to the assault and sexual harassment to students at Cleveland, by other Cleveland students. The school is prioritizing protecting the comfort of the specific boys who create this unsafe and unhealthy climate. The administration has every power to hold these students accountable and instead they brush it off, ignore the victims, and censor activism pertaining to the issue.
As per Tinker vs. Des Moine (1969), schools do not have the right to censor speech or symbols just because of a "desire to avoid the discomfort and unpleasantness that always accompany an unpopular viewpoint." This case ruled that students do not lose their first amendment right to free speech and freedom of expression when they enter school. Cleveland has no right to censor posters hung up in the hallway that do not interrupt any academic work or teachings.
We're doing this because we're tired of the administration dismissing students voices because it makes them uncomfortable or look bad. Despite them saying the issues with the posters were due to the location of where they were hung up, they even took down ones put in designated community billboards for any student made posters or flyers. We want to show administrators that it's important to make these changes now. Please sign and share!
