A Safer New Zealand for International Students

A Safer New Zealand for International Students

The issue

We came to New Zealand because of its good reputation of being peaceful and friendly; our parents trust this country to provide the best education possible, both in academia and consummating our personalities.

However, this reliance has been enormously undermined due to the recent, dreadful assaults on international students in Auckland.
On 22nd March, two female Chinese students were attacked and robbed in Albert Park right beside the University Of Auckland, the very centre of our city. The images of those girl's wounds were horrific, and they struck to the hearts of our parents and other international students. One of these two ladies were beaten out of consciousness, and the perpetrators didn't even seize the violence after they robbed that student. We can not bear to see such barbaric action took place right next the University of Auckland, the most prestigious education institution of New Zealand.

Even before the international students community could recover from the rage and grave, another violent crime against one Chinese student in Oakley Creek Park rekindled the fire. He was brutally attacked by two young criminals, as he strived to keep his school papers these two brutes were revoked, they hit him even harder and verbally abused him, then they searched him and took his laptop.

We are also very appalled with the fact that,in last year about 66.7% of most serious young offenders, were discharged under s282, dismissed or withdrawn. From the perspective of Asian culture, youth was never the excuse for brutality, and we believe many kiwis share this prepective.

This situation has come about, we feel that the inefficiency of the police service, the brutality of some youth criminals and the flaws of this country's legal system are starting to diminish its reputation and ability to attract more international students.

It is not fair to judge a nation by the characters of its criminals, and we are not going to do so, but we want the Kiwis to share our concerns and to help us, to urge this government to take immediate actions, especially in legislation level, to protect the safety of international students and also, the key contributor to New Zeland economy.

We demand:

  1. More cameras deployed on the streets;
  2. A firm national database of fingerprints;
  3. More streetlights in places like Albert Park
  4. A thorough review of the laws regarding youth crime, especially Children, Young Persons, and Their Families Act.
  5. More transparency in Youth Court, please at least inform the public the penalty of young offenders.
