The Issue

As a CBC Ward Councillor, I've heard countless residents call for slower speeds in Barton-le-Clay, striving to make our village a safer place for both pedestrians, including children getting on and off school buses, and drivers. These calls come from the shared experience many of us have: witnessing cars zip through our high street at unsettling speeds, leaving us feeling vulnerable. Some residents have even voiced the desire for average speed cameras to ensure safer driving behavior.

But this isn't just about individual concerns; it’s about collective safety. Barton High Street has significantly more traffic than several other local streets where a 20 mph speed limit has already been implemented. By introducing measures such as speed humps or a 20 mph zone throughout our village centre, we can drastically reduce the risk of accidents and give our community members peace of mind.

One key area in need of attention is the northern end of the village, where residents find it challenging to cross safely. This presents a pressing need, not only for those routinely traveling on foot but also for drivers exiting locations like the Co-Op, who face dangerous speed-related risks due to high-speed traffic.

By implementing these simple traffic calming measures, or another crossing too, we can transform Barton-le-Clay into a much safer environment for everyone. Reducing speed also means reducing the chances of serious accidents, leading to a more serene and community-focused village.

I urge everyone who wants to see these positive changes to support this petition. Together, we can present our case to CBC, emphasizing the urgent necessity for enhanced road safety on Barton High Street. Sign this petition, and let's make Barton-le-Clay a safer village for all.
