The Issue

Dear EPCOT Creative Team,

We, the undersigned visitors and admirers of EPCOT, would like to express our appreciation for Spaceship Earth, which beautifully portrays humanity's journey in the evolution of communication and the sharing of knowledge through the ages.

The attraction is both inspiring and educational. However, we respectfully wish to bring to your attention two significant contributions from ancient India that we believe deserve recognition in the story of human communication.

1. The Decimal Place-Value Number System and Zero

The decimal place-value numeral system, including the concept of zero as a number, was developed in ancient India and later transmitted to the rest of the world. Today, it forms the foundation of modern mathematics, science, engineering, commerce, and digital computing. It transformed the way humanity records, communicates, and processes numerical information.

2. Pāṇini's Scientific Analysis of Language

Around the 5th–4th century BCE, the Indian scholar Pāṇini composed the Aṣṭādhyāyī, one of the world's earliest and most systematic grammatical works. His precise analysis of language has been recognized by linguists as a remarkable achievement in the study of human communication and has even influenced modern linguistics and computer science.

We believe that acknowledging these two milestones would make the story presented in Spaceship Earth even more complete and representative of the diverse civilizations that have contributed to humanity's intellectual heritage.

Our request is made in the spirit of historical inclusiveness and educational accuracy. We do not seek to diminish the achievements of any civilization, but rather to ensure that visitors from around the world gain a fuller understanding of humanity's shared legacy.

We respectfully request that these contributions be considered for inclusion in future revisions of the attraction.

Thank you for your time, consideration, and for continuing to inspire millions of visitors through education and imagination.

Sincerely,
