A Puppy Isn’t Content: Protect Animals From Online Abuse

A Puppy Isn’t Content: Protect Animals From Online Abuse
The Issue
A three-month-old puppy should never become collateral damage in the race for views, clicks, or online fame.
On January 30, Chicago-born rapper and streamer Aspen Kartier, whose legal name is Aspen Easterling, was arrested in DeKalb County, Georgia, following allegations of animal cruelty connected to a livestream video that circulated widely on social media. According to authorities, the footage prompted an investigation that led officers to her residence, where the puppy seen in the video was recovered and placed in protective custody with DeKalb County Animal Control. The case remains under investigation, and no final legal determination has yet been made.
What is clear, however, is that this situation highlights two urgent responsibilities our community cannot ignore: protecting vulnerable animals and ensuring that online platforms do not enable or reward harmful behavior.
Animals depend entirely on humans for their safety. When there are credible allegations of abuse, the priority must always be the animal’s well-being. That means a thorough investigation, appropriate legal accountability if wrongdoing is confirmed, and a permanent, safe outcome for the puppy involved. DeKalb County has existing animal cruelty laws for a reason, and the public deserves confidence that they are enforced consistently and transparently.
At the same time, this incident raises serious concerns about how livestreaming platforms handle content involving animals. Influencers with large audiences hold real power, and when harmful behavior is broadcast or monetized, it sends a dangerous message that cruelty can be excused or ignored if it generates attention. Platforms like Twitch have a responsibility to act swiftly and uphold clear standards that protect animals from exploitation or abuse on camera.
We are calling on DeKalb County District Attorney Sherry Boston and DeKalb County Animal Control to fully investigate this case, enforce Georgia’s animal cruelty laws if warranted, and ensure this puppy is placed in a safe, loving home. We are also urging Twitch’s Trust & Safety leadership to strengthen and consistently enforce policies that prevent animal harm from being streamed, shared, or rewarded online.
Protecting animals and promoting responsible online behavior should never be controversial. It’s about basic decency, accountability, and making sure no animal suffers for entertainment.
Sign this petition to stand up for animal welfare and demand responsibility—from both authorities and the platforms that shape our digital world.
