The Issue

As families increasingly move along Highway 7, our vibrant communities on the Eastern Shore of Nova Scotia are witnessing a steady growth. However, this growth has not been matched with the necessary recreational infrastructure that families and youth desperately need. Currently, there is only one indoor ice rink available, and no four-season recreation facility. This stark inadequacy places the burden of engagement and recreation on parents, children, and community volunteers, who tirelessly strive to make do with what little is available.

The Eastern Shore has long faced neglect in terms of recreational development, while other regions within the Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM) see new rinks and multi-purpose facilities being developed. This neglect is more than just an oversight; it actively curtails the potential for sports and leisure activities, which are crucial for healthy living and fostering community spirit.

Recreational facilities are vital for keeping our children active, building their skills, and providing them with safe spaces to play and grow. As it stands, many families are forced to travel long distances to reach adequate facilities, which results in additional time, cost, and effort that could be avoided if a local option were available. Moreover, without a local rink, Eastern Shore misses out on hosting sports events, which invigorate the local economy and promote community pride.

We propose the construction of a new, modern rink facility on the Eastern Shore to serve our rapidly growing population. This facility should be versatile enough to support ice sports throughout the winter and transform into a multi-use recreational space during other seasons. Funded partly by the HRM and potentially by corporate partnerships, this new facility would not only cater to ice-related activities but also house community events year-round.

We urge local and regional authorities to recognize this growing need and commit to a timeline for planning and development. By investing in our young people and supporting the needs of our community, we can make the Eastern Shore a thriving hub where families choose to stay and grow.

Let's stand together to put the Eastern Shore on the map for recreation development. Please sign this petition to advocate for the establishment of a new rink facility. Our families, children, and community deserve better.
