A Negotiated Exit to End the War: A Call to Global Leaders to Open a Path for De-escalation.

We call on global leaders to actively explore every diplomatic avenue that could bring the war in Ukraine to an end — including offering a negotiated exit as a tool of de-escalation, if doing so can stop the killing and prevent a violent collapse that would endanger millions.
History shows that wars and crises have sometimes ended not on the battlefield, but through a door left open for those in power to step down. When that door is shut completely, leaders who fear for their own fate often choose to fight to the end, prolonging suffering for entire nations.
History also offers a darker warning. In 1917, Russia's leadership underestimated the depth of the crisis at home until events overtook it — and what followed was not a managed transition but revolution, civil war, and years of bloodshed that cost millions of lives. Crises that are denied or ignored do not disappear; they erupt. The lesson is not that any one leader deserved rescue, but that when no realistic off-ramp exists, the worst outcomes become the most likely — for the country and for ordinary people who never chose the war.
We do not ask anyone to forget the cost of this war or the suffering it has caused. Accountability matters. But we also recognize a hard truth: a cornered leader with no way out has every incentive to escalate, while a credible path toward de-escalation can save countless lives.
We urge global leaders and mediators to:
- Keep open and explore serious diplomatic channels aimed at ending the war.
- Be willing to consider all realistic de-escalation mechanisms, including a negotiated transition, where these can demonstrably stop the violence.
- Prioritize the protection of human life — both in Ukraine and among ordinary people in Russia — over the politics of the moment.
We believe that ending this war, and preventing a chaotic or violent unraveling, is worth pursuing through every legitimate means. We ask the world's leaders to have the courage to keep that path open.
