A Mother’s Day Grief: A Call to Protect Malaysia’s Wildlife – Implement Safe Crossings

The Issue

On this past Mother’s Day, Malaysians were moved by a heartbreaking scene on the East-West Highway in Perak: a baby elephant was tragically killed by a lorry, and its grieving mother stood by, refusing to leave, trying to rouse her lifeless calf. Her silent vigil spoke volumes—a mother’s love, pain, and confusion in a world where her kind is being pushed to the margins.

This tragic incident is not the first. The East-West Highway, which cuts through wildlife-rich rainforests, is notorious for animal-vehicle collisions, especially involving endangered elephants. As their ancient migratory routes are severed by development, these gentle giants are left vulnerable on roads built through their natural habitats.

We call on the Malaysian Government—specifically the Ministry of Works, the Department of Wildlife and National Parks (PERHILITAN), and relevant state authorities—to urgently implement purpose-built wildlife crossings (overpasses and underpasses) along the East-West Highway, especially in key zones within the Perak-Kelantan corridor.

Wildlife crossings are a proven, effective solution globally. In countries like Canada, India, and Thailand, such structures have dramatically reduced wildlife deaths and improved road safety for motorists.

Let us turn this mother elephant’s grief into action. Let her calf not die in vain.

By signing this petition, you are urging decision-makers to:

(i)Conduct immediate studies to identify wildlife crossing hotspots

(ii)Allocate funding and resources for the construction of wildlife crossings

(iii)Implement speed-reduction zones and animal crossing signs in key danger areas

Together, we can pave the way for a safer future—for our wildlife, our roads, and the future generations of Malaysia.
