A More Vibrant Brighouse: Support Expanded Pedestrianisation for All
The Issue
Join us in transforming Brighouse into a vibrant, pedestrian-friendly hub that champions its thriving bars, cafes, and local businesses. While a step in the right direction, the current pedestrianisation plan overlooks significant parts of our beloved town centre, leaving many of us on the sidelines.
As patrons and supporters of our local bars and cafes, we see an opportunity to create an inclusive, lively outdoor space that boosts local commerce and enriches our community life.
We believe in a Brighouse that is accessible and welcoming to all, with a vibrant streetscape that invites us to stay and enjoy. Help us realise this vision by urging Calderdale Council to extend the pedestrianisation plans. Let's ensure every business has the chance to flourish, and that every visitor experiences the best of what Brighouse offers.
While we appreciate the initiative to pedestrianise our town, we believe the current plans could be expanded for greater impact.
The current plans only allow a small portion of Commercial and Bethel Streets to be pedestrianised. This limited scope may not substantially benefit the area's numerous bars, cafes and restaurants. Furthermore, the existing one-way traffic system, which often encourages fast driving, won't be adequately addressed by only pedestrianising the small areas on both main streets. Apart from loading, or disabled parking, we don't see the benefit of having flow traffic through the town, as there is sufficient parking on the edge of Brighouse with less than a five-minute walk into the town centre with very flat terrain, providing little in the way of support to help our businesses.
We propose a broader vision. For example, extend the pedestrianisation right from the top of Commercial Street to the corner of King Street, and turn the upper half of Bradford Road into a space conducive to community activities and outdoor relaxation. We request they also, look at other appropriate businesses on Bethel Street that would benefit from wider pedestrianisation.
Doing so encourages numerous businesses to invest in outdoor facilities and infrastructure. This not only optimises the use of outdoor space but also enhances the overall atmosphere of our town.
The underlying goal of this project should be to foster a thriving business community and to improve the quality of life for all residents. If the plans don't serve these objectives, we must question whether this investment will truly deliver the intended benefits.
Here are some common misconceptions about the topic of pedestrianisation which are backed by data:
MYTH: Pedestrianisation leads to business decline: Numerous studies have shown that pedestrianisation can increase footfall and retail sales in the area. Pedestrian-friendly streets often boost commercial activity due to increased accessibility and improved ambience.
MYTH: Lack of parking will deter visitors: While convenient parking is important, its absence doesn't necessarily equate to fewer visitors. Many people are willing to walk a short distance from outlying parking areas, especially when the destination is a vibrant, pedestrian-friendly zone. In Brighouse, ample parking is available just on the edge of the town centre, ensuring accessibility for all.
MYTH: Pedestrianisation restricts access for disabled people: Properly planned and implemented pedestrian zones can improve accessibility for people with disabilities. Features like level surfaces, wide pathways, and frequent seating areas can make pedestrianised areas easier to navigate than traditional streets.
MYTH: Only large cities can successfully implement pedestrianisation: Towns of all sizes can reap the benefits of pedestrianisation. It's all about creating a space that caters to the community's needs and enhances the local lifestyle. Brighouse has the potential to create a unique, pedestrian-friendly environment that reflects our vibrant local culture.
MYTH: Pedestrianisation increases congestion on surrounding roads: While it's true that traffic patterns may change, well-planned pedestrianisation schemes include comprehensive traffic management strategies to mitigate this issue. Reducing town centre traffic can often improve overall flow on surrounding roads.
Here are some potential improvements based on existing evidence about the benefits of pedestrianisation:
BENEFIT: Increased Footfall: Numerous studies have found that pedestrianisation generally leads to increased footfall. One study in one city found that areas with pedestrianised streets had a 14% increase in retail sales, compared to a 9% increase city-wide.
BENEFIT: Improved Safety: Pedestrianisation can make areas safer by reducing vehicle-related accidents. This can cause an area more appealing for families and individuals to visit, potentially increasing your customer base.
BENEFIT: Outdoor Seating and Events: Pedestrianisation can allow outdoor seating and events to attract more customers. This is especially relevant after the COVID-19 pandemic, as many people are more comfortable socialising outdoors. We can also invest in semi-permanent coverings for less favourable weather. With the current situation, investing in any significant outside infrastructure is simply not feasible.
BENEFIT: Air Quality and Noise: Pedestrianisation can improve air quality and reduce noise levels, making the area more pleasant for customers and attracting more people.
