A Lead-Free Future: Support the SBAN Chester Task Force
The Issue
A Lead-Free Future
Please sign in support of the SBAN Chester Equity Task Force, an initiative developed by public, private and civic leaders to mitigate lead exposure in Chester, PA though educating residents on the dangers of lead poisoning.
Your signature of support will validate our concerns and strengthen our efforts to deliver equitable resources for Chester to combat lead poisoning.
Context:
"Equity in education, health, and economic opportunities is not just an ideal but a necessity for the growth and sustainability of Chester County. Addressing these systemic challenges requires a unified approach and immediate action." - Nicole O'Dell, Swarthmore Black Alumni Network.
In Chester County, lead poisoning remains a silent crisis, disproportionately affecting children in older homes. Over 85% of homes in Chester were built before 1978, significantly increasing the risk of lead-based paint exposure. This issue is compounded by a lack of awareness among residents, leaving many disconnected from vital resources.
"Chester residents don’t realize that lead is a problem, so they are not connected to FREE resources for testing, early intervention services, and home remediation." - Kristin Motley, Bureau of Health, City of Chester.
The urgency to address this challenge is underscored by the severe developmental and cognitive impacts lead exposure can have on children, leading to lifelong health and educational setbacks. Reducing lead exposure is not just a public health imperative but a critical step towards breaking the cycle of poverty and inequality.
By fostering greater community awareness and connecting residents with necessary resources, Chester can build a healthier, more equitable future.
Please sign in support of addressing this critical obstacle and corresponding 90 day sprint and 12 month action plan.
