A Independent Public Enquiry into the 1984/85 Miners Strike
The Issue
THE MINERS STRIKE of 1984/85 was a shocking example of a gross Miscarriage of Justice. A living example of vicious intent on the part of a British Police State - Margaret Thatcher's Police State. Of course the infamous Battle of Orgreave was central to all of this. Yet, the wanton violence happened for a whole year at many pits. It was a question of violent thugs running riot - those very thugs were police officers, bullying boys in blue. Yes, miners and pickets stood and fought. They simply had to, to protect their jobs, their families, their livlihoods, their communities against a violent backlash of police thuggery that Thatcher relished and endorsed. This was broken Britain in the 1980s.
Yet, it went much more deeper than that, through corruption and cover up of a right wing state. You only have to look at the sordid connections between Thatcher - South Yorkshire Police - the far right media - other notable police forces - the strike itself and of course ORGREAVE and HILLSBOROUGH.
As we approach the 40th anniversary of the Miners Strike it is worth that NOT ONE POLICE OFFICER has ever been charged, prosecuted, convicted and certainly not jailed - just like Hillsborough. There needs to be a full and totally INDEPENDENT Public Enquiry over this gross Miscarriage of Justice. The miners and their families have waited far too long for JUSTICE which has not been forthcoming. The usual abuse of power and a corrupt police state is evident and things need to change.
- All miners and pickets pardoned and exonerated.
- The pension funds that were stolen by the Government returned.
- That those police officers and police forces responsible be charged and prosecuted.
- Compensation given to those affected.
- A sincere, thoughtful and humble apology offered in sincerity.
As time has passed on, many victims have died through age and ill health, even SUICIDE or through drink. It is high time that these brave, strong, honest people truly got what they deserved following this awful travesty of justice.
It is perfectly true - JUSTICE DELAYED IS JUSTICE DENIED.
