A Day Off for Diwali

A Day Off for Diwali
The Issue
I want to recognize the importance of Diwali, the Festival of Lights, by asking for an official day off so that Nepali people—and everyone who celebrates—can fully honor this meaningful occasion.
Diwali (also known as Tihar in Nepal) is celebrated each year in October or November, depending on the lunar calendar. In 2025, it will take place from October 17 to 21, with the main day of celebration on October 20.
Diwali is not only a festival of joy, light, and renewal, but also a time for families and communities to come together in gratitude, reflection, and hope. It holds deep cultural and spiritual significance for millions of people around the world.
For Nepali communities, as well as others who celebrate Diwali, balancing work or school obligations with the traditions and gatherings of this festival can be difficult. Allowing a day off would show respect for cultural diversity, promote inclusion, and give people the chance to celebrate without stress or compromise.
I believe that recognizing Diwali as an official day off would be a small but powerful step toward greater cultural appreciation and unity.
Let’s make Diwali a recognized day of rest and celebration for all who hold it close to their hearts.
