The Issue

Childrens born on June, July, August who are not eligible for class 1 admission for the academic year 2026-27, even if the child has a very good potential the childrens are not allowed for class 1 admission but they will be eligible for the next academic year admission by the time our children will complete 7 years of age when they start class 1. They say that even if there is 1 day of age difference the child is not given admission but what is that 1 day going to make a difference?

A bright and eager young learner, faces unnecessary barriers to entering Class 1 due to age restrictions currently enforced in Bangalore, Karnataka. This experience is not unique to our family; many parents across Bangalore are encountering similar challenges, and it poses significant hurdles to our children's educational journey.

In Bangalore, the rules governing admission to Class 1 require children to reach a certain age by June of the academic year. However, these rigid age restrictions fail to consider the diverse developmental paces of individual children. For example, children who show readiness and capability to commence formal education may be denied entry simply because they do not meet the prescribed cut-off age. This can lead to unnecessary delays in their educational progression and may impact their psychological and social development.

According to the National Education Policy 2020, the focus should be on the child's readiness for school rather than a strict age criterion. Rapid cognitive and emotional growth in early childhood means that a one-size-fits-all approach to school readiness is outdated and counterproductive. Adjusting the age limit to accommodate children based on developmental readiness rather than rigid age thresholds would align local practice with modern educational insights.

We urge the educational authorities in Bangalore and the Government of Karnataka to reconsider these age-related restrictions for Class 1 admission. There needs to be a more flexible framework that acknowledges and nurtures the potential of young learners who are ready to embark on their schooling journey, irrespective of their exact age at a certain calendar month.

By signing this petition, you are helping bring about a significant change in the education system in Bangalore, which will allow our children to explore their full potentials without unnecessary hindrances. Let's work together to create an educational environment that is fair and inclusive for all children.
