A Call for End of Social Inequality in the Philippines

A Call for End of Social Inequality in the Philippines
The Issue
Social inequality refers to an unfair gap in opportunities and treatment between social individuals. According to Crossman (2024), it comes from unequal opportunities and benefits rooted in social positions or statuses in a community. The Philippines has substantial social inequality, indicating the need for urgent reform.
As the 2024 midterm elections approach, I urge the next leaders to prioritize addressing social inequality. Here are three key steps they must take:
Investment in education
Education is the foundation of a just society. A strong education system fosters an informed and open-minded population, essential for reducing inequality. As Ireland (2024) puts it, "Education is the bejeweled key that opens gates to every other aspect of inequality—political, economic, racial, judicial, gender-, or health-based."
However, the Philippine education system is already in a crisis as the 2022 PISA results showed bad performance in science, mathematics, and reading. The government has to start investing more in education with equal access to proper resources without socioeconomic bias and address these alarming disparities.
Expand Economic Opportunities
There should also be development in the environment so that underrepresented regions and sectors can easily access employment or entrepreneurship. The government must create Economic opportunities, to empower communities and boost individual incomes and promote inclusive, broad-based growth to the country.
Strengthen Anti-Discrimination and Social Equity Laws
More stronger laws are needed to protect vulnerable groups against discrimination. Lawmakers should create laws that highlight equal opportunities and resources, promoting equality and inclusiveness. This will help build a resilient and cohesive society, where every individual will have the opportunity to thrive.
Let every citizen and leader work to rise against social inequality and in order for us to have a just and fair society. those who are in power can use their authority to combat this dilemma. In signing the petition, we can thus call the attention of all towards an issue that worries everyone. One nation, equal opportunities.
