Supreme Court Justice David Souter has announced that he will retire at the end of the Court's current term. 

In filling the vacancy he will leave, President Obama has the opportunity to nominate someone who is committed to core constitutional values: justice, equality and opportunity for all… someone who is faithful to the Constitution, its values, its principles and its history. 

That means WE must be diligent. The progressive agenda for the term of this administration and the next several decades depends on having a Supreme Court that will not block progress. The Right Wing knows this and will do all it can to prevent change on the Court. 

Sign the letter to President Obama urging him to be bold in his nomination to fill Souter's Supreme Court seat. 

The Supreme Court has been home to champions for justice, like Justices William Brennan and Thurgood Marshall, who fought to make sure the Constitution's protections extended to every American. But the appointments of Chief Justice John Roberts and Justice Samuel Alito -- two right-wing ideologues -- by former President Bush have pushed the Court in a dangerous direction. 

People For the American Way strongly encourages President Obama to nominate someone who will lead the Court in a new direction… someone with an active commitment to the promises of equality and justice enshrined in the Constitution in the mold of Brennan and Marshall. We believe at this historic time, we need a bold, historic nominee.

We need to make sure the voice of the grassroots is heard loud and clear: President Obama should not be hesitant to pick a justice who will defend our personal freedoms and ensure that every person has equal access to justice... a justice who will defend the American Way.
