In his continued and tireless attempts to save the Canidrome greyhounds, Albano Martins, director and founder of the animal protection group ANIMA - 澳門愛護動物協會, has written two letters (in English) to the Secretary for the Economy and Finance Affairs (SEF) of the Macau government, Mr Leong Vai Tak.
In the first letter, Albano appeals to the SEF to support him in his offer to the Canidrome for Anima to take on the care of the greyhounds still there, and to that end attaches the letter he has sent to the CEO of the Canidrome. In this, he reiterates once again his offer to take full care of the greyhounds still at the Canidrome and to arrange for their adoption, and invites the CEO yet again (as his invitation has always been ignored so far) to join him in a televised public debate in English to explain why he (the CEO of the Canidrome) should think his project for the future of the dogs is better than that of Anima, given that the Canidrome’s previous record of placing the dogs in adoption so far has been virtually nil.
In the second letter, also to the SEF, Albano deals with two subjects, the Jockey Club in Macau (the horse racetrack) and the Canidrome.
Regarding the Jockey Club, he expresses dismay that despite the terrible conditions of the horses living there among their own faeces and in derelict stables with collapsing roofs, and despite complaints from the public, the Governor has inexplicably extended the Jockey Club’s contract with the Macau government – which had been due to end in August 2017 – to the end of February 2018, even though they are making a loss.
Regarding the Canidrome, Albano tells the SEF about the plans of Angela Leong and the Canidrome management to try and continue to stay in the area and create a fake ‘protection organisation’ so that they can hang on to the greyhounds. This would very likely mean that they would sell them off to mainland China, Vietnam or other countries with no animal welfare laws while claiming that the dogs had been ‘adopted overseas’ : the latter a very unlikely scenario, as Albano points out, from people who have killed over 15,000 dogs over the years without ever giving them the chance to get out alive.
Finally, he warns the SEF in no uncertain terms that it will reflect very badly on the Macau government if it postpones the closure of the Canidrome as it has done with the Jockey Club.
We are all behind you, Albano!
