Anima director Albano Martins has been voted ‘Personality of the Year’ by Hoje Macau, the most popular Portuguese newspaper in Macau, which has dedicated its front cover to him today 29th December. ‘Albano Martins has managed without too much fuss to put an end to the Canidrome, and he is also able to find homes for the greyhounds. Because of this, the public image of Macau has risen by several degrees in the eyes of the ‘civilized world’.’ Quoting from page 2, and taking up a quarter of the page: ‘Albano Martins: The economist unafraid of speaking out, has managed among other achievements, to achieve the civilised goal of closing down the Canidrome. And well done to him, this is as it should be! Macau has left the world map of animal cruelty thanks to the continuous, persistent efforts of Albano Martins and of all of the Anima team. Our government should be happy to have received such a big prize, as the solution to this problem has attracted the attention of many celebrities, like the unforgettable Brigitte Bardot, providing a more positive image of Macau. And it doesn’t end there. After the closure of the track, a solution to the fate of those dogs must be found and Albano Martins is slowly gathering support for this goal, from Australia to England, for those dogs now free of slavery. Doing this will stop these dogs ending up as meat, to be eaten by other animals (with reference to humans). Besides the question of the Canidrome and the greyhounds, Anima continues to carry out preventative and educational work, saving the IACM (the official local dog pound) much work, and educating new generations to extend to other animals the respect that they are not even capable of providing for humans.
