Demand for 5-day Work Week for Students in Kota, Rajasthan.

The Issue

Infamous for IIT-JEE/NEET-UG coaching centres and notorious for teenagers jumping off of buildings or breaking their cervical fractures with noose, Kota is witnessing a huge problem.

Students as young as fourteen years old study in coaching institutes, or exam factories as they call it in the West, usually experience intense academic pressure. This has not only resulted in students being unable to cope up with their classes, tests, quizzes and studies in general, but the situation becomes worse due to other challenges, too — like unhealthy and unbalanced diet, tasteless food served in messes, claustrophobic hostel rooms as well as, in some cases, minimal casual interactions between peers. Along with this, an average student deals with loneliness and a sense of worthlessness due to inability to understand what is being taught in classes and low marks in periodic tests. The issue is real.

The Kota administration has been quite helpful to students. But, trust me, modifying fans in hostels[1] is not an efficient method to prevent suicide. Instead, a close study of the dynamics of the student ecosystem/culture is required in order to take good, practical decisions.

This year, the city broke all past records by reporting over twenty-four suicides[2] within eight months. May their souls rest in peace. Anything and everything should be done to make sure this number does not rise. In certain coaching centres, holidays are as rare as hen's teeth. Therefore, I wish to present my humble opinion that students studying in coaching centres in Kota must be granted at least a five-day work week with recurring holidays on Sundays and Wednesdays without any change whatsoever in the duration of classes. This can be an immediate, logical step. With this in mind, I hope the success of this petition contributes in preventing cases of depression, anxiety and suicides among students, plus makes the academic experience of students comfortable.

This petition was authored by a grade XI student and IIT-JEE aspirant, currently studying in a well-known coaching centre in Kota.
