4Youth: Sheltered Pathway and Waiting Area for Campus Safety and Mobility

The Issue

A waiting shed is a small structure that can serve as a temporary shelter to be used as a resting place, to wait for peers, guardians and/or parents, and to protect students against bad weather, such as heavy rains and extreme heat. It is usually built on the side of the road to serve as a place for people waiting for rides. It is very important to have a well-designed roadside waiting sheds for commuters waiting for jeepneys, buses or any other public transportation vehicles (Daub et al, 2020). Schools should have waiting sheds wherein students can wait to be picked up after their class and help keep the students’ belongings from getting wet when it rains.

There are two seasons here in the Philippines, summer (dry season) and rainy season. The dry season lasts from December to May, and the rainy season lasts from June to November (Krysti, 2023). But even so, students still must go to school and for this reason, we need to build a shelter where they can rest, especially for those students who walk to school. In addition, a covered pathway is a type of walkway built to shield people from the weather while they move between locations. Apart from adding to a school's looks, covered walkways can also act as a shelter between buildings, keeping staff and students dry and comfortable no matter the weather (Steve, 2021).

We have noticed that students from our school, especially those without umbrellas, struggle in walking to or from San Juan Senior High School Stand-Alone, especially when the weather is too hot or is pouring. Some resort in running in the rain, risking their belongings from getting wet, as well as their health. During summer, those without umbrellas or other protection from the heat from the sun may risk heatstroke or dehydration.

By building a waiting shed in our school, it will help students who go home or have lunch at cafeterias since there is no shelter on the way up to San Juan Senior High School Stand-Alone. Furthermore, while the students are waiting after dismissal, we want to ensure their safety and convenience. It would be easier for our students in San Juan Senior High School Stand-Alone to wait for a vehicle to ride in, and they shouldn’t have to worry about getting wet or being exposed to the sun. Additionally, if there is a typhoon or heavy rain during school days, the waiting shed will serve as a shelter for those students without umbrellas. This project will serve as a solution to prevent the students and their belongings from getting wet, as well as getting diseases or sickness due to the weather.

This project would provide a waiting room and covered walkway in the campus' triage area to shield students from the sun and rain. This pathway will enable students and other school personnel to move around safely and comfortably as they go about their daily activities.

To ensure safety and convenience, the project design puts emphasis on incorporating weather-resistant materials in building the pathway and waiting area. The covered walkways will protect students from the sun's rays, lowering their chance of heat-related diseases while allowing a more comfortable stroll. To further improve student and personnel comfort, the waiting areas will also be equipped with seats and climate control measures that will provide protection from unpleasant weather.

Once the project is completed, the students' safety, wellbeing, and campus experience will all be greatly improved. The waiting areas and covered pathways will not only be beneficial in reducing weather-related dangers, but also contribute to inclusion and a feeling of community by providing welcoming areas for socializing. This project will serve as a reflection of our school's dedication to prioritizing students' needs and building an atmosphere that encourages learning as well as individual development.

This project aims to benefit the following:

The students: This project will provide students with shelter, ensuring their safety and health.

The teachers: This project will also benefit teachers who like the students, suffer with weather conditions.

The parents: This project will reassure the parents of their child(ren)’s safety and will make it easier for them to pick their child(ren) up during dismissals.

The visitors: The waiting sheds provide a dry spot to wait, serve as a shelter and protection from weather conditions, making the waiting experience more comfortable for visitors.
