493k people with mental health challenges are missing out on community supports

The issue

Connect with us to send a message to Australian health ministers.

In August 2024 a landmark report revealed 493,000 Australians with moderate and high-need mental health challenges had no access to community supports (also known as psychosocial supports).

Psychosocial supports help people with mental health challenges recover and live well in the community.

The Australian, state and territory governments are responsible for addressing this gap.

In the more than 12 months since the report was handed down, the governments have done nothing.

We call on Australian governments to:

  • Expand existing supports for individuals and family carers and kin by 30 December 2025
  • Establish a Lived Experience-led co-design team by 30 December 2025 to advise on how best to address the unmet need
  • Implement their recommendations over time, commencing 1 July 2026
  • Commit to addressing the unmet individual and carer need by 30 June 2030
