36 Months Japan - Raise the age of social media citizenship from 13-16.

36 Months Japan - Raise the age of social media citizenship from 13-16.
The issue
Excessive social media use is rewiring young brains within a critical window of psychological development, causing an epidemic of mental illness. It has been linked to mental health issues, cyberbullying, anxiety, depression, eating disorders, self-harm and even suicide in young people.
Social media is a minefield for a young person going through puberty.
- Gamified online interaction makes using these platforms highly addictive.
- Their algorithms target vulnerabilities and feed unhealthy obsessions.
- The ability to share and receive commentary from a social network allows cyberbullying to grow in the shadows of the service.
At 13, children are not yet ready to navigate online social networks safely. These years are crucial for them to develop a secure sense of self alongside social confidence. 36 Months aims to create a supportive platform for teenagers to cultivate a secure identity first, so they can navigate the digital landscape with resilience and mindfulness.
Founded in Australia, 36 Months is a movement for healthy teen development, without the influence of social media, focused on the 36 months between 13 and 16. We advocate for legislation change that delays social media citizenship until the age of 16. This petition is a call to action for parents, teachers and coaches in Japan. The custodians of healthy teen development who still believe that an intentional 36 months, could change a lifetime.
Advocate with us for crucial policy change and sign this petition that will be taken to parliament (Diet).
