His story is extraordinary: a son of immigrants from Nigeria, Giannis was born and raised in Athens. Having no papers for the first 18 years of his life, along with his older brother, Thanassis, would help out their parents by hawking watches, bags and sunglasses.

In 2012 he joined the senior squad of Filathlitikos and played for them in Greece's second-tier basketball league during the 2012–13 season. He was selected 15th overall by the Milwaukee Bucks in the 2013 NBA draft and from the following season, his star started shining in the NBA.
