2023 Virginia Second Look Act

2023 Virginia Second Look Act
The Issue
Virginia's Second Look Act
We the undersigned wish to show our support and appreciation for the "Second Look Act" bill proposed by Del. Carrie Coyner in the upcoming 2023 Virginia General Assembly session. This bill is similar to HB 906 presented in the 2022 session, that was tabled by Del. Bell (Chair of the Committee for Courts and Justice). We petition for the current bill to be brought to the floor for a vote. We urge the members of this great body to represent the will and needs of the people, that make up this Commonwealth, and pass this bill.
Passage of this bill will begin the process of curing disparate sentences of long term incarcerated offenders who have been rehabilitated and deserve a "Second Look" at their sentences by the Court. Passage of this Act will benefit the Commonwealth in many ways. ie: Provide a safer prison environment for staff and inmates, by allowing allocation of staff and resources to where there's a real need. Instead of spreading those staff and resources thin, to also care for those who no longer pose a threat to public safety. The obvious benefit of saving tax dollars, in the way of not having to continuously inflate the D.O.C.'s budget beyond what's truly necessary, can not be overlooked. We urge every Delegate to support this bill.
