$2,000 IS NOT FINANCIAL SECURITY: STOP FORCING DISABLED WASHINGTONIANS TO SPEND DOWN THEIR SAVINGS
No person should have to become financially destitute before they can receive essential long-term care.
Under current Washington rules, some people seeking Medicaid-funded long-term care through SSI-related eligibility pathways are subject to a $2,000 countable-resource limit.
Two thousand dollars.
In 2026, $2,000 is not financial security.
It can disappear with one car repair, one housing emergency, one unexpected medical expense, one broken appliance, or one expense insurance doesn’t cover.
Yet people living with profound disabilities can find themselves in a position where money they responsibly saved becomes an obstacle to receiving the care they need.
That is backwards.
We should encourage people to save for emergencies—not create a system that rewards them for exhausting their savings.
People with disabilities still have rent and mortgages. They still have utility bills. Their homes still need repairs. Cars still break down. Emergencies still happen.
And for someone whose disability prevents them from ever returning to work, rebuilding an emergency fund may be impossible.
We are calling on Washington lawmakers to reform these outdated financial eligibility rules.
We are asking Washington to:
Raise applicable long-term-care Medicaid resource limits substantially and establish a meaningful protected emergency-savings allowance for people with disabilities who require long-term care.
This isn’t about one person.
It’s about every Washingtonian who worked, saved, planned responsibly, became disabled or developed a serious illness, and discovered that the safety net expected them to exhaust their financial security before providing essential care.
$2,000 is not enough.
Disability should not require poverty.
No one should be penalized for planning.
