Change the name of Pierce Library

The Issue

Pierce Library at Eastern Oregon University is named after Walter M. Pierce, the 17th governor of Oregon. Pierce was a known KKK affiliate and was assisted in his election by their support of him. Pierce was a supporter of the Alien Property Act, which was intended to keep Japanese immigrants from owning land in Oregon. In 1925 in the case of Pierce v. The Society of Sisters, Pierce attempted to pass legislation making it mandatory for all children in Oregon to attend Public School. The Compulsory School act did not pass as it was deemed to be in violation of the 14th Amendment. Pierce’s Klan affiliation heavily influenced this case as it was carried out in an attempt to shutdown Catholic Schools. Pierce was Anti Catholicism, Anti Semitic, and a racist, it is overdue that EOU change the name of the building.
