Countries always enter the Olympics Opening Ceremony in alphabetical order using the host country's language. When using Japanese, "Chinese Taipei" is listed between Czech Republic and Chad, and this is exactly the order in which the National Olympic Committees are listed on the Olympics website.

Naturally, multiple news organizations reported that "Chinese Taipei" would enter between Czech Republic and Chad.

However, contrary to expectations, and to the surprise of many, "Chinese Taipei" actually entered between South Korea and Tajikistan.

How to explain this? 

It appears that the Japanese were being very clever. They used the spelling for "Taiwan," which should be placed between South Korea and Tajikistan when arranged in alphabetical order. 

To cap it off, the announcer for NHK, the Japanese public broadcaster, cheerfully said, "Taiwan des!" when Chinese Taipei entered the building. "Taiwan des" translates to "This is Taiwan."
