Enable Bedrock Edition Access for Macbook Minecraft Players
The Issue
I have purchased Minecraft on my MacBook, and while I was aware that the game would not come with Bedrock, I do not see a feasible reason why. I have played Minecraft for a while, always on Bedrock, because of how compatible it is compared to Java. A lot of Minecraft is based around community and multiplayer; however, without Bedrock on MacBook, you can only play with people who use Java. The issue is the lack of compatibility with other players. Someone with an iPad can play with anybody except a MacBook user, as long as they have Bedrock. One argument against Bedrock on MacBook is that it is built on Windows, but this is not a valid reason since iPads and iPhones both have Minecraft on their App Store.
Another reason MacBooks should have Bedrock is that we have already seen crossplay between MacBooks, iPads/iPhones, and Windows PCs through Minecraft Education Edition. This shows that despite differences in internal software, Minecraft can support crossplay.
I do not understand why Mojang decided to make Java the only version available on Mac. Java is more intensive to run and requires a stronger computer. Bedrock would have been the better choice, allowing MacBook users a smooth transition across all their Apple devices, including iPads. With Bedrock, Minecraft could increase its player count, as Bedrock is optimized for performance and smooth gameplay on various devices, meaning even older MacBooks could run it efficiently, increasing demand for Minecraft.
Another reason is pricing fairness. Windows users pay the same amount but get both Java and Bedrock, while MacBook users only receive Java. A MacBook player might unknowingly spend £30, the same as a Windows user, only to find they cannot play with their friends due to a lack of knowledge about Minecraft’s versions. At the very least, MacBook players should receive a price reduction.
But why is there even a need for Bedrock on MacBook if Mac users already have Java?
The MacBook gaming community is growing stronger, especially with the development of new macOS versions. These computers are becoming powerful enough that many popular games have expanded their compatibility, such as Resident Evil Village, Baldur's Gate 3, and No Man’s Sky. These games were initially unavailable on MacBook but were eventually released due to demand. MacBook players have wanted Bedrock for years and have resorted to emulators, providing money to third-party services instead of Mojang. These emulators can even provide free copies of Minecraft, meaning Mojang loses profit. Many game developers ensure their games are available on as many platforms as possible to prevent this issue.
A more technical reason to bring Bedrock to MacBook is that Java is very GPU-intensive, whereas Bedrock is optimized for lower-end devices. MacBook players could comfortably run Bedrock, making gameplay smoother and more accessible.
Finally, Minecraft Bedrock has been released on less popular platforms, such as Windows 10 Phone, VR, and even Fire Stick, all of which still generated profit. Some of these devices, like Fire Stick, later discontinued Minecraft, but not due to a lack of players—rather due to technical issues with downloads and data usage.
In conclusion, there is a clear demand for Bedrock on MacBook. This demand has been seen on platforms such as a Reddit post on /MacGaming and highly upvoted comments on Minecraft support pages. Without Bedrock, MacBook users cannot play with friends on iPads, iPhones, PlayStation, or Xbox and miss out on full compatibility. They also cannot access Minecraft Marketplace, where they could spend money on skins and other content, which would, in turn, benefit the Minecraft community. This fragmentation harms the community, as there is no universal version where all Minecraft players can play together. Support the cause here: https://www.change.org/minecraftbedrockeditiononmacbook
