London Underground Limited: Stop the closure of Whitechapel ticket office

The Issue

With Crossrail coming to London, Whitechapel Underground station is undergoing a huge refurbishment, which will see the station serving thousands more customers each year. However, London Underground have announced their plan that the completed station will be without a ticket office. This is a blatant backtrack on Mayor Boris Johnson's promise of no ticket office closures. It will mean an unacceptable service for thousands of customers using the station, many of whom are from diverse backgrounds and cultures, as well as customers with physical and non-visible disabilities, who rely on the service of a staffed ticket office. If London Underground are allowed to get away with closing the ticket office at Whitechapel, it will only be a matter of time before more ticket offices across the Tube network are closed. This will only result in thousands of fare-paying customers receiving an unacceptable level of service. Sign this petition to tell London Underground that ticket office closures are unacceptable and the public deserves this service.

Dear Petitioner Thank you for your petition to the Mayor about the ticket office at Whitechapel. Every journey matters and the Tube is today carrying more customers, more safely and more reliably than ever before. As London continues to grow – with its population set to increase by a further 1.8 million people by the early 2030s, the equivalent of a Tube train full of passengers each week – Transport for London (TfL) is improving and expanding the network to meet this challenge. The work at Whitechapel is just one part of a comprehensive programme to modernise the network and increase capacity. The Mayor remains absolutely committed to ensuring that Whitechapel station will remain staffed when trains are running, with staff more visible and available to help customers. Passengers will be able to get assistance more quickly and easily, whether that is help with buying their ticket, advice with planning their journey or with any other aspect of their travel. Whilst delivering a vastly improved station at Whitechapel, TfL will make the best possible use of the limited space. This means providing more ticket machines able to offer more ticketing functionality to customers than available currently, rather than a replacement ticket office. Staff will be present at all times and will be more visible than before and therefore better placed to help customers where they need it most, which is not from behind a ticket office window but out on the public station areas. When the next stage of work to expand and improve Whitechapel station for the arrival of Crossrail starts in July next year, the current ticket office will need to be removed and TfL will open a temporary ticket hall. This will be fully attended by staff to provide the highest level of assistance to customers. Once completed, Whitechapel will have a first class station with increased capacity and step-free access, so that all passengers can travel to and from the station easily and safely. Thank you again for writing to the Mayor. Yours sincerely Ruth Phillips Public Liaison Unit
