Campbell Newman: A bomb took my son’s hands away, please give him support to get back his life

The issue

My son had just celebrated his 15th birthday when he was handed a homemade bomb disguised as a golf ball -- it blew his hands to pieces. Ball bearings shredded his fingers off, and left shrapnel wounds through his body leaving his dream of being a builder in tatters.

It haunts me every waking moment. And has left Michael facing a lifetime of operations and prosthetics to ever get some sense of a future back -- yet the government has now deemed he is only worth a minor level of compensation.

In January we're meant to have another operation on his hands. I can't believe I'm now going to have to say to Michael we’re going to struggle with the meagre compensation that’s been promised -- that's why I'm asking Campbell Newman to please, please commit to providing us with adequate compensation, and fix this inadequate system for victims of crime.

Our doctors say that the bombing will mean years of operations. The next one, he'll have the little finger on his left hand re broken, straightened, and the tip removed so they can fuse a metal rod in.

I’ll never forgive the criminals who did this for taking away my son’s hands. I know that no sentence or compensation will ever give my son back the future they've stolen from us -- my son wanted to be a builder, and build me a house. The government putting a limit on our support is another devastating blow.

I can't believe the situation we're facing now. Our only wish as a family is that Campbell Newman can provide us some hope that Michael will have the support to live a life where he can contribute -- that they might show just some compassion.
