Dexter’s Law: Strengthen Animal Cruelty Penalties in Arizona.

Animals deserve protection and compassion yet across Arizona, countless innocent lives are being brutalized with little to no consequence. While severe animal cruelty is technically a felony, penalties remain far too lenient, often resulting in minimal or no jail time. Arizona needs Dexter’s Law, a law similar to Florida’s, which has successfully strengthened penalties for animal abuse and ensured justice for abused animals. This is a critical step to protect our pets and prevent future cruelty.

This must change. Dexter’s Law calls for stronger accountability and real justice for animal victims through:

• Enforce tougher sentencing and mandatory minimums for severe animal abuse.

• Impose lifetime bans on animal ownership for convicted abusers.

• Require mandatory reporting by veterinarians and groomers to stop abuse early.

• A public registry of convicted abusers to protect communities and shelters.

Studies show a clear link between animal cruelty and violence against people. By taking animal abuse seriously, we protect both animals and humans.

For many of us, pets are family and our laws should reflect that. It’s time Arizona sends a clear message: cruelty will not be tolerated.
