John Bel Edwards is an American politician and attorney who served as the 56th governor of Louisiana from 2016 to 2024. A member of the Democratic Party, he was the Democratic leader of the Louisiana House of Representatives from 2012 to 2015. Edwards began his political career as a member of the Louisiana House of Representatives, serving from 2008 to 2015. He holds a Bachelor's degree in History from the United States Military Academy at West Point and a Juris Doctor from the Louisiana State University, Paul M. Herbert Law Center. Edwards also has military experience as a Captain in the US Army Rangers, 82nd Airborne Division. Before his political career, he worked as a law clerk and later as a partner/attorney at Edwards & Stevens, LLC.
