The Government of India, officially referred to as the Union Government, operates as a federal parliamentary democratic republic, which means that it is a federation with a President as the head of state, and a Prime Minister as the head of government. It is governed by the constitution of India which was adopted by the country on 26th January 1950. The government is divided into three distinct branches: Legislative, Judicial, and Executive. The President has the highest authority in the country and the Prime Minister is head of the union government. The Parliament of India, found in New Delhi, is the supreme legislative body in the country. The Government of India has 28 states and 8 Union territories, each with their own local governing bodies.
