The Corte Interamericana de Derechos Humanos, also known as the Inter-American Court of Human Rights, is an autonomous judicial institution based in San Jose, Costa Rica. It was established in 1979 by the Organization of American States (OAS) to enforce and interpret the provisions of the American Convention on Human Rights. Its two main functions are adjudicatory and advisory. Under the adjudicatory function, it hears and rules on the specific cases of human rights violations referred to it. The advisory function involves the issuing of opinions on matters of legal interpretation or of general interest.
