Tell Ben and Jerry's: Cows Need Their Tails!

Ben & Jerry’s, the iconic Vermont-based ice cream company, has always cultivated its image as quirky, fun-loving, and socially responsible. Ben & Jerry’s parent company Unilever announced that it would not source eggs for its Hellman’s mayonnaise from caged hens. Bravo! But it’s high time that cows, who provide the main ingredient for Ben & Jerry’s ice cream, got more attention. Tail docking of dairy cows -- amputation of the animals’ tails using whatever method farmers choose to use, typically without anesthesia—is widespread in the industry and here in Vermont. This, despite the fact that 15 years of accumulated scientific evidence concludes that docking does not enhance product quality; evidence of distress, along with acute and chronic pain, is incontestable; the cow is deprived of her ability to swat flies. Tail docking is a bad habit that persists for the sake of worker convenience. Even conservative veterinary and industry associations, including Hoard's Dairyman, admit that tail docking is "one practice whose only place should be in the annals of history." Presently, farmers’ participation in Ben & Jerry’s so-called “Caring Dairy” program is voluntary, and a recent update of the program now includes payment to producers who don’t dock tails. This is a small step in the right direction. (A few former participants refused the incentive rather than give up docking, but their milk is still accepted.) Ben & Jerry’s needs to let all their suppliers and the co-ops know that cruelty to any cow is unacceptable. WHAT'S THE SCOOP, BEN & JERRY'S? What’s the plan to make ALL your suppliers Caring Dairies, and put an end to tail docking? Recently Saputo, Canada’s largest dairy processor, announced that it would refuse to buy milk from farmers who don’t treat their animals humanely, and committed to ending tail docking. Even grocery giant Walmart has announced new standards that address painful procedures, including tail docking: "We have listened to our customers and are asking our suppliers to engage in improved reporting standards and transparency measures regarding the humane treatment of farm animals." Let’s call on Ben & Jerry’s to demonstrate a strengthened commitment to ending tail docking--show us a plan for all producers to stop docking cows’ tails, and make animal welfare progress transparent on their website. Walmart is making great strides. Ben & Jerry’s should certainly be able to keep up. Visit for more information.

Tell Ben & Jerry's You Want Non-Dairy Ice Cream Options

We have been loyal customers of Ben & Jerry’s for many years, and love the socially progressive nature of the company: their Fair Trade policies, commitment to improved animal welfare, and their long-term support of Marriage Equality! Given all that, we are surprised that a company as ethical as Ben & Jerry’s does not make a non-dairy ice cream. We are familiar with their line of sorbets that are vegan, and think it's great that they offer those, but it would be a huge sign of Ben & Jerry’s support for action against climate change if they offered a non-dairy ice cream.  For many, Ben & Jerry’s sets the ice cream agenda. They are in a position to lead the way and make non-dairy ice cream a mainstream choice, like meatless Mondays. Offering an ice cream for their vegan customers would signal their support for cutting back on animal products. There is now a scientific consensus that animal agriculture is the single largest contributor to global warming, outstripping even the transportation industry in its production of greenhouse gases. Moreover, offering a non-animal product line of ice cream would signal to their customers that such alternatives can be mainstream and don't mean sacrificing great flavor and their favorite brands, and that they don't have to be vegan to enjoy them. By offering a vegan ice cream, they could show consumers that non-dairy ice creams don't need to be relegated to the shadowy sections of grocery freezers. There are so many non-dairy milks made from soy, coconut, and almond these days that it seems a cutting-edge company like Ben & Jerry's would want to explore these options seriously! And non-dairy products are also good for those with dairy allergies. There are also serious ethical issues with dairy farming: even small dairy farms separate calves from their mothers, a process that is traumatic for both the cow and the calf. Non-dairy alternatives are in demand for those trying to make compassionate, as well as environmentally friendly choices. Please help us call on Ben & Jerry’s to make cutting back on animal products part of their sustainability agenda and their delectable range of ice cream! [Photo credit to Ineke van Rossum]

Create "Ruth Bader Ginger" ice cream!

Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg is my personal hero. As the first Jewish woman to serve on the Supreme Court, she inspires me to think big about what I can accomplish in my own life. And not only is she an accomplished legal scholar, she’s also become a cultural icon for young women like me; my friends and I -- and lot of people on the internet -- lovingly refer to her as “the Notorious RBG.” I think it’s important to recognize women heroes everywhere we can. So when I read that only two of Ben & Jerry’s honorary flavors over the past three decades have featured women, I started this petition asking the ice cream company to honor Justice Ginsburg with her own flavor: Ruth Bader Ginger. As writers Tania Lombrozo and Amanda McCall have noted, Ben & Jerry's have named more than twenty ice cream flavors after people over the past 30 years, but only two for women -- and neither of those is even available in stores today. Ben & Jerry’s prides themselves on being a socially responsible company that cares about making a difference, and recognizing the contributions women like Ginsburg have made to the world matters. If Ben & Jerry’s make this flavor, they can start a national conversation about why it’s important to celebrate women who have helped make our nation great. This conversation is important because young women need role models like Ginsburg. You may know about her work on the Supreme Court, but not a lot of people know that she was Columbia University’s first female tenured professor. Or that, during her first year of law school, her husband was diagnosed with cancer. She took notes for him and typed up his term papers, all while maintaining her own course load, a seat on the Law Review, looking after their first baby -- and graduating first in her class. Ben & Jerry’s has named flavors after John Lennon, Willie Nelson, and Elton John. Stephen Colbert got his flavor after publicly waging a campaign on the Colbert Show and their most popular flavor, Cherry Garcia, was suggested by a customer who wanted them to honor Jerry Garcia. That’s why I know, if enough people support this petition, we can get them to add another American icon, the Notorious RBG, to that list. Will you join me in asking Ben & Jerry’s to celebrate an amazing woman -- and give us a really tasty new flavor -- by producing an ice cream in honor of Ruth Bader Ginsburg?

A "Rich Piana" Tribute Ben and Jerry's Ice Cream Flavor

First off, who was Rich Piana? Better yet, who IS Rich Piana, for his legacy and message will be carried on long after sudden passing on August 25th, 2017. Rich Piana was born September 26, 1971 in California. From the time he was a young boy, he was inundated into the bodybuilding world. His mother competed in bodybuilding contests and through this, Rich essentially "grew up" in the gym. It was in the gym where he was inspired by other old school bodybuilders to start lifting weights. Rich Piana was a successful bodybuilder, some of his accolades include; NPC Mr. California Champion, 1st place in the Sacramento Pro Show, 1st place in the Border State Classic XXX bodybuilding show. He also competed in the NPC USA championships twice. But the reason Rich Piana is so famous today isn't for his titles won, its for who he was as a person, the message he spread to bodybuilding, nutrition and business enthusiasts all over the world. Rich Piana has starred in national commercials and TV shows and had gained an extremely large following in the social media world with over 1.2 million followers on Instagram and just under 1 million subscribers on Youtube. Being larger than life himself physically, Rich started his own supplement, nutrition and overall lifestyle business known as 5% Nutrition. With this business, he had since created many products and catch phrases known to gym goers everywhere, "One day you may", "Love it, Kill it", "Shake Time", "Bigger by the Day" and so forth. Rich Piana was watched daily on Youtube by millions of people who have had the opportunity to get a more intimate glance into his life. Thousands upon thousands of people lined up at fitness expos to be able to shake his hand, exchange a few words and take a picture with him. From his extreme love for his dogs to fast cars, sneakers, food and lifting, everyone who watched Rich Piana felt like they really knew him. And with that, anyone who knows of Rich Piana knows of his unequivocal love for Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream. His freezer would be stocked with a cascade of different flavors and what seemed like every other video, he would run out and have to go on a "Ben & Jerry's" run to pick up some new flavors. He once stated that he ate "a pint of ben & jerry's every night." He became so recognizable with loving Ben & Jerry's that countless memes were made of him having his own flavor, all of which can be found if googled.   With his love for Ben & Jerry's it is this Petition's intention and all those who sign it, to have a Ben and Jerry's Flavor made in honor or Rich Piana's Passing. Thank You

Bring Ben & Jerry's non-dairy ice cream to Canadians

Well, so much for surprises! So many of our fans have been asking us to carry a non-dairy product, we couldn’t keep the secret anymore. We can now confirm that it’s true, we are working on non-dairy flavours, and we hope to have them available in Canada in 2017. Well, that is, if we don't eat them all ourselves first. Some might ask, “why not now?” (Yes, we've seen your tweets!) The answer is, we've been working on this for quite a while, and want to make sure these flavors live up to what Ben & Jerry's is known for: enormous chunks, delicious swirls and a commitment to values-led ingredient sourcing. Our Flavor Gurus have been hard at work to ensure they do, which includes lots of taste testing! Sorry, but that’s all we can share for now. They say good things come to those who wait, but in the meantime sign up below to get the latest updates on this project and details on when these non-dairy flavors will be coming to a freezer near you. Peace, Love & Ice Cream Ben & Jerry's
