The Australian Labor Party (ALP) is a major centre-left political organization in Australia. Having been founded early in the federation, specifically in 1891, it is one of the oldest political parties in the country. ALP is part of the mainstream Australian political spectrum, with a political ideology rooted in social democracy and the labour movement. Known for advocating progressive policies including the welfare state, access to healthcare, and workers' rights, the Labor Party often competes with the center-right coalition of the Liberal and National parties for political dominance. Traditionally, the party maintains affiliation to the Australian Council of Trade Unions and international links with social democratic parties through the Progressive Alliance network.
