What if your bodily autonomy was violated at birth?

What if your bodily autonomy was violated at birth?
The Issue
Circumcision, often referred to as 'Male Genital Mutilation' (MGM), should never be performed on infants or children. It is based on outdated myths and religious beliefs that do not hold up to modern scientific understanding. If an individual later chooses to undergo the procedure, it should be their personal decision, made once they are old enough to consent—ideally at 18 years of age or older.

I am starting this petition because I believe that no newborn boy should be circumcised without his consent. As someone who has deeply researched this issue and reflected on my own experience, I am angry and frustrated that this irreversible procedure is still being performed on babies. It is a violation of bodily autonomy and the basic human right to decide what happens to one’s own body.
Circumcision is often performed for cultural, religious, or social reasons, but these reasons fail to justify removing a healthy part of the body without consent. The foreskin has important biological functions—it protects the sensitive glans, contributes to sexual pleasure, and plays a role in overall genital health. The fact that circumcision is still widely accepted despite this knowledge is deeply troubling.
I know this because I, too, was circumcised as a baby. I never had a say in the matter, and the more I learned about circumcision and the foreskin, the more upset I became. I now wish that I had been left intact. The anger and frustration I feel about this procedure are overwhelming, but what’s worse is knowing that countless other babies are going through the same thing, with no choice in the matter.
It's important to clarify that while circumcision is a central religious practice in Judaism, it is not a universal requirement across all religions. In Islam, for example, circumcision is often seen as a cultural or traditional practice, not a religious mandate. There is no clear, universally binding command in the Quran to circumcise boys. Many Islamic scholars and religious leaders have acknowledged that circumcision, while common in Muslim cultures, is not compulsory. This distinction is important because it shows that circumcision should not be treated as an essential or required practice for Muslim boys.
However, circumcision in Judaism holds deep religious and cultural significance, being part of the covenant between God and the Jewish people. While it is a central tenet of Judaism, this practice is rooted in tradition rather than a medical necessity. It is essential to recognize that, despite its religious significance, this is a cultural and religious practice that should not be imposed on babies who cannot consent to the procedure.
This petition is not just about my own experience—it’s about protecting the rights of all children. No parent should have the right to make such a permanent, irreversible decision about their child’s body without their consent. Circumcision, when done without medical necessity, should be banned. It’s time for society to stop treating this procedure as a standard or cultural norm and start respecting the bodily autonomy of every individual.
This petition calls for the following actions:
Ban the non-medical circumcision of newborn boys. Circumcision should only be performed if absolutely necessary for medical reasons, and any such procedure should be done with the informed consent of the individual or their guardian.
Raise awareness about the functions of the foreskin. Parents should be educated on the natural role of the foreskin, including its health benefits and role in sexual well-being. They deserve to make informed choices for their children.
End non-consensual, non-medical circumcision. The practice of circumcising newborns for non-medical reasons violates a child’s right to bodily integrity. We must put an end to this practice and ensure children are not subjected to it without their consent.
Provide alternatives to circumcision. Parents should be given access to accurate, non-biased information about caring for an intact child. The decision to circumcise should not be based on outdated myths or social pressure but on full knowledge of the facts.
I know that I can’t change what happened to me, but I don’t want others to have to go through the same thing. Every person, regardless of age, deserves the right to choose what happens to their own body. That includes newborn boys, who should be given the same respect and autonomy over their bodies as anyone else.
Sign this petition to help stop the non-consensual circumcision of newborn boys. We can protect future generations and ensure they grow up with the right to make their own choices about their bodies.
Together, we can make a change and protect the rights of every child.
