The Issue

I hear a lot of people are not satisfied with what the government is doing. Pew Research Center states that only 20% of people are happy with what the federal government is doing. It also states 65% of people state most candidates only run for their own interests. I find that we keep on getting these unfavorable views on the government if we keep on seeing the same few people in Congress. I feel like the federal government would be better if we had term limits for Congress. I propose probably 2 terms for the Senate and 4 for the House of Representatives. I am inclined to debate on how many terms. I base it on the presidency and their current term length, with the presidency being limited to two terms, not one. The Senate has 6 year terms, so I don't feel any more than 2 terms. 4 terms of the House is the same length of time as 2 terms as the presidency. I am alright with changing the term length and/or a different amount of terms in total, I just figured to put what I think would be enough.

I feel like we really need new voices in government. I often find myself unsatisfied with the presidential elections because we have seen those faces before. I find that it's just fair if we apply the same ideas to both the presidency to the legislature. It has been nearly 80 years since the 22nd amendment was ratified. If we limit how long a person could serve as president, why shouldn't we try to limit how long anyone in Congress is in power as well?  The Legislative is supposed to be equal in power for checks and balances. Obviously the legislative branch is meant to have way more members and the executive is more of the President and Vice President. Still one person could serve in the house for decades on end without stopping. They could make dozens of decisions of their own. They could have a disconnect from their constituents after a while in office but still get reelected because of the incumbency bias. I find a big reason to install term limits is to get rid of members who lose the way of their constituents but are still in and still get reelected because they're an incumbent.

States with term limits for their state legislatures are: Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Florida, Louisiana, Maine, Michigan, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, and South Dakota. Only 16 states. Not quite a majority of states but they could be taken as examples. 23 states had established term limits for their national representatives in the U.S. Congress in their state governments but the Supreme Court struck it down, saying at the federal level, an amendment needs to be passed.

I find term limits could help limit the power one person has and could prevent corruption down the line. Even if it gets rid of experienced lawmakers, I see it could help reduce the disconnect from an elected official and their constituents and corruption when it comes for serving too long. I heard the idea of an amendment for term limits had been tossed around but I find it's best if it's done now, not later. I find it's now or never. I find it's an overall good check on the government.
