Students for Better Sleep

The Issue

As a high school student in Wake County, I witness firsthand the effects of early school start times on my fellow students. Many of my peers suffer from anxiety, depression, and an overwhelming sense of exhaustion, all of which are exacerbated by starting the school day too early. We are required to be alert and engaged during the most critical times of our educational lives, yet the lack of adequate sleep due to early start times hinders our ability to perform optimally.

Scientific research is clear: adolescents need approximately 8 to 10 hours of sleep per night to function best, and their natural sleep cycles make it difficult for them to fall asleep before 11 p.m. Despite this, Wake County high schools begin their days around 7:25 a.m., forcing students to wake up as early as 5:30 am. This results in a significant sleep deficit, which can lead to deteriorated mental and physical health, compromised academic performance, and increased risk of accidents.

A 2014 study by the American Academy of Pediatrics strongly recommended middle and high schools to start no earlier than 8:30 a.m. to better align with teenage sleep cycles. Schools that have adopted later start times have reported improvements in student attendance, grades, and overall mood. Moving the bell schedule to a later time could have profound positive effects on the student body's well-being and academic success.

This change, while seemingly minor, would make a significant difference in the lives of every student in our county. By shifting the high school start time to at least 8:30 a.m., we can begin to address the root causes of student fatigue and poor mental health. It will not only benefit students' academic standings but also their overall happiness and quality of life.

Join us in advocating for this critical change to Wake County's high school bell schedule. We need your support to make this initiative a reality. Sign this petition to prioritize our health and education.
