The Issue

Historic England’s original 1987 entry for the Muzle Patch states: This large building is situated in a prominent central position in the town. The largely unaltered exterior with a fine Victorian shop front makes a valuable contribution to the townscape. The building was subsequently awarded a Grade II status.

During the last 20 years or so, the interior and exterior have been allowed to fall into serious disrepair. The footpath in front of the building is closed indefinitely (to protect the public from falling debris but then creating a further risk to pedestrians on an often busy corner) as the owner/s have done nothing to instigate the works asked of them by Devon Building Control.

Sadly, today, after so many years of neglect, the building is an eyesore and structurally at risk, making this part of town far less attractive than it could be despite the revitalising efforts of Baskerville’s, Berto’s, Hippo, The White Hart, The Horse, The Union Inn, The Gateway, Zero and many other businesses. Our community’s efforts are being undermined as the Muzle Patch has been allowed to deteriorate to the point of severe disrepair and dilapidation. The neglect has tarnished the beauty of this significant part of town.

Immediate action is vital to stop further damage. If we let the neglect continue then we are ultimately erasing irreplaceable chapters of our town's heritage, losing architecture key to the town’s beauty and hurting our community's economy and cultural vitality.

We call upon Dartmoor National Park Authority to prioritise the repair, restoration and upkeep of the Muzle Patch. We urge them to issue a Repairs Notice, engage with Devon Building Control, contract a structural engineer and work with the community in revitalising this historic crossroads in the centre of Devon.

This isn't just about saving buildings; it's about cherishing the identity and spirit of Moretonhampstead for future generations. It’s about ensuring that every stone, every wall, and every corner of our historic centre continues to echo the activities of the past and the people before us.

We need to stop the rot and safeguard Moretonhampstead's historic centre. Your support can make the difference—sign this petition now to urge action from Dartmoor National Park Authority. Together, we can save history and help secure our town’s future.
