End Brutality against Students in Nepal, Appeal for help, UN human rights commission

The issue

On September 8, 2025, the future leaders of Nepal, the Gen-Z, organized a peaceful protest against corruption and the controversial social media ban. These young individuals, full of hope and determination for a prosperous and transparent future, took to the streets in the spirit of non-violence and unity. What happened next, however, was a nightmare that has left indelible scars on our nation.

In a shocking violation of human rights, Nepal Police responded with extreme brutality, opening fire on these innocent, unarmed minor students who wore nothing but their school uniforms, carried nothing but their backpacks, and held nothing but their dreams for a better Nepal. Over 19 young students were mercilessly murdered in cold blood, chased down with the wrath of oppression to the doors of hospitals, while more than 200 others suffered grave injuries—an unforgettable day of tragedy that has left families, friends, and an entire nation shattered.

The blood of our children stains the hands of Prime Minister KP Oli, Chief District Officer of Kathmandu Chhabi Rijal, and Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak, who cruelly empowered the police to open fire. This cannot stand. Their actions are a blatant violation of not only the right to protest, but a fundamental aggression against the freedom and future of the youth of Nepal.

I urge every compassionate individual on this platform to join hands in solidarity. We must demand immediate justice for the victims of this appalling violence and push for the resignation and prosecution of those who authorized and executed these orders. The international community must be made aware. We need reforms, accountability, and assurance that our students can express their constitutional rights without fearing for their lives.

These actions constitute serious breaches of international human rights law, specifically under the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC, 1989) and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR, 1966):

Relevant UNCRC Articles Violated

Article 6: Every child has the inherent right to life, and states must ensure maximum survival and development.

Article 19: Children must be protected from all forms of violence, including excessive force by authorities.

Article 37(a): No child shall be subjected to torture, inhuman, or degrading treatment.

Relevant ICCPR Articles Violated

Article 6(1): Everyone has the inherent right to life, and this right must be protected by law.

Article 24(1): Children are entitled to special protection as minors under international law.

The unjustified killing of students  particularly those in school uniforms and unarmed represents a direct violation of the right to life and could trigger international accountability under both conventions.

The situation in Nepal requires immediate global attention. The lives and rights of Nepalese children are in imminent danger, and intervention from the international community is crucial to uphold the principles of human dignity, justice, and protection of minors.
