Dear Premier, please act to acquire the Underwood Avenue Bushland for Conservation

Dear Premier, please act to acquire the Underwood Avenue Bushland for Conservation

The issue

We, the undersigned, ask the State Government to acquire Underwood Avenue Bushland, Shenton Park as an A-class Nature Reserve.

The protection of Underwood Avenue Bushland is URGENT.  Survey pegs have appeared around the fence line.

The University of WA is not adequately managing weeds or feral animals within Underwood.

We ask you to recognise the bushland’s significance for the State of Western Australia by buying it to prevent its total degradation.

Underwood Bush is critical for Perth’s last remaining flock of Carnaby’s Cockatoos. The birds feed here, roost adjacent to the bush and drink at nearby water points.

Underwood Bush is home to Perth’s own unique and critically endangered Tuart tree community along its limestone ridge. Native orchids flower in the undergrowth. Its Jarrah trees are some of the best of the few remaining on the coastal plain.

This land is a precious example of Banksia Woodland listed by the Federal government as ‘endangered’ and is a key element of a green corridor connecting the Swan River to the Indian Ocean, through Kings Park, Shenton Bushland, Bold Park and coastal vegetation.

The State Labor party’s policy platform acknowledges that ‘Biodiversity is crucial to environmental sustainability and must therefore be protected.’.

Please acquire Underwood Avenue Bushland for conservation as an A-class Reserve for the protection of nature and for the people of Western Australia.
