Save Our Scout Hut St David's

The Issue

The St David's Scout Hut in Ffynnon Wen has long been a popular place for community groups to meet.

As a community asset, it has been open for hire at very low cost by groups and residents.

The Hut has accommodated many different activities, including the People's Shed, woodworking, knitting, sewing, metalwork, playgroups, and local church meetings.

It was originally built in 1992 through strongly supported public subscription ("Buy a Brick"!), using local tradespeople to do the work.

At present, the Scouts are the owners of the Hut building, and Pembrokeshire County Council own the land.

However, there has been no Scout Group active locally for many years, and the Scouts therefore no longer need the building.

The risk is that the Hut may therefore now face permanent closure and very possibly demolition.

The loss of the Hut would cripple the ability of many small to medium sized groups to meet locally.

But there is a solution.

The Scouts have offered the Scout Hut building to the St David's City Council as a free gift.

Pembrokeshire County Council have offered the land on which the building sits to the City Council rent free for 125 years.

The City Council met on 22 April to discuss this. It deferred a final decision on what to do to an extraordinary meeting of the Council. This was due to have been held on Monday 20 May. However, regrettably, the illness of a key participant has meant that the date has had to be postponed again. We understand a new date will very soon be confirmed. When the date is finalised we will quickly update the details on this petition.

So we REALLY DO NEED need your support!

We urge the St David's City Council Councillors to:
 - accept the gift of the building from the local Scouts;
 - lease the land from Pembrokeshire County Council.

Please sign this petition if you support these aims!

A Quick Update - 28 August

Things have been delayed for a considerable time but we are in the final stages of submitting a report to the City Council setting out planned administrative measures to support the transfer of ownership of the Scout Hut. As soon as the decisive meeting is scheduled we will post notice of it here, and we will let you know the outcome. Once again thank you all for your support. We are sorry that it has taken so long for the matter to be resolved.
