The Issue

In the past, Phantasy Star Online 2 (PSO2) was more than just a game to some of us. It was a distinctive and deeply engaging experience that brought together many players from different parts of the world even before the release of global servers for PSO2. With it's innovative systems, rich storytelling, and dynamic combat, PSO2 stood out as an MMO, earning lasting loyalty and recognition. However, in 2021, everything changed. The game was overshadowed by the release of Phantasy Star Online 2: New Genesis (NGS), which, despite its promising premise, has not lived up to the expectations set by its predecessor. While PSO2 and NGS are linked, allowing for players to transition between both games, only NGS receives updates. This neglect has left PSO2 to "rot in the dust," and many loyal players feel abandoned.

PSO2 deserves more, than to be a forgotten relic standing in the shadow of NGS. The game has proven its worth and its potential, It is important to acknowledge that PSO2 was not without its flaws. Class balance issues and the introduction of successor classes created balance challenges that were not addressed quickly enough or were addressed but not in a way that would always be beneficial. However, these were solvable design problems, not signs of a game without value. With proper attention, PSO2 could have continued to evolve and improve rather than being left behind.

Moreover, when PSO2 was at its peak, it had major commercial success for SEGA, reportedly racking up over 60% of profits ironically a lot more than what NGS is making at the current moment. This level of success highlights not only the game’s popularity but also its long term viability when it was properly supported. Even with the conclusion of the final chapter Episode 6, PSO2’s universe still holds substantial potential. The world of Oracle remains rich with opportunities for further development, whether through new storylines, expanded lore, or connections to other parts of the franchise such as Idola: Phantasy Star Saga. While these settings may differ in theme, they exist within the same broader universe, leaving room for meaningful expansion. We are not asking to replace what came before, but to return to it. To continue building upon a world that still has more to offer. For many of us, Oracle is not just a setting, it is home.

What we request is clear: a revival of PSO2 as a standalone game, separate from NGS. By allocating dedicated resources and frequent updates to PSO2, we can rejuvenate this game and restore the riveting gameplay and engaging narrative that fans loved. Providing both games with their own identity and development timelines will respect their unique characteristics and cater to diverse player interests.

We are aware that the development team behind NGS is smaller than the team that supported PSO2 during its peak years. However, this makes it even more important to allocate resources effectively rather than concentrating all efforts on a single title. By dividing support between both PSO2 and NGS, even at a modest level, SEGA could better serve two distinct player communities. PSO2 does not require a full-scale redevelopment, but rather consistent maintenance, targeted updates, and a clear commitment to its future.

This request is not driven solely by nostalgia. It reflects a clear opportunity to build upon an established foundation, re-engage a loyal audience, and preserve an important part of the Phantasy Star legacy. We urge SEGA to recognise the enduring value of PSO2 and to invest in its future. With the right support, both PSO2 and NGS can coexist successfully offering unique experiences to a diverse and passionate community. If you believe PSO2 deserves renewed support, we encourage you to sign and share this petition. Together, we can demonstrate that there is still a strong and dedicated audience ready to see PSO2 thrive once more.
