Neighborhood Flood Control

Neighborhood Flood Control
The Issue
The city of Pinellas Park is generally a lower lying area which is already susceptible to and incurs flooding even without the progressively more frequent and intense storms. This applies particularly to the homes/properties along 60th St N and adjacent Avenues north of 110th Avenue. Ongoing and planned development in nearby parcels, including property immediately north of 111th Place has been sold to developers. They have plans to build 14 homes on this small tract and have applied to the city for rezoning to change this single family residence property to accommodate all these homes. This and the current development directly across from there on 60th St creates a major risk of increased flooding.
These developments are systematically elevating ground levels, making our homes and properties susceptible to flooding. Ignoring proper drainage systems can lead to significant property damage and health hazards for our families. If they are negligent the developers and or their buyers need to be held liable.
According to the guidelines from the Southwest Florida Water Management District (SWFWMD), developers need to include appropriate drainage design/construction to prevent further flooding. Failure to do so can make them subject to legal consequences.
We wish to demand that appropriate measures be taken, ensuring all developments meet SWFWMD standards. Their approval must be procured prior to any development endeavor. Should flooding occur due to developmental negligence, we need to let them know that lawsuits and fines will be imposed to cover damage done to our surrounding homes and properties.
It is high time those in power prioritize the well-being of our community. Take a stand. Help us ensure responsible development and preserve the our neighborhood. Please sign our petition today and attend the meeting with city council at 5141 78th Ave N, Pinellas Park, FL 33781on December 5th! Call 727-369-5631 for more info.
