The Issue

In 2023, Almalence announced their Digital Lens software. Digital Lens is software for VR headsets that optimizes their image clarity via eye tracking, reducing artifacts such as chromatic aberration. In 2024, Almalence released a public demo for a limited time to overwhelmingly positive feedback. Despite this, Almalence hasn't released a publicly available version of Digital Lens, and Pimax declined to add it, likely due to not wanting to pay to add it.

Here's an article Almalence published showing the difference Digital Lens makes: https://almalence.com/pimax-crystal-turns-crystal-clear/

Almalence hasn't given any updates on Digital Lens since mid 2024. I’ve been very upset about this, because we've been shown a breakthrough development in VR technology, but have never been given it.

Some people online have suggested that Almalence could release Digital Lens as a subscription based product, I’ve been incredibly against that idea for the reasons below.

  • Charging a subscription fee for image clarity enhancing software is disingenuous, and would be an excuse for people to not own it. The software would likely be handled locally on the hardware running the headset anyways.
  • It's very likely that always online DRM would be implemented, potentially causing a significant negative impact on performance. At the very least, an online check in of some form would likely be required.
  • When the service is discontinued, you would lose the ability to use Digital Lens, and your investment.

I’ve had the idea that Almalence could release Digital Lens to the public as open source software on a site like GitHub. Almalence released their open source eye tracking software on GitHub, they could do the same with Digital Lens.

If Almalence releases Digital Lens as open source software, they should release all of its source code, and documentation on how to implement it into VR headsets on a site like GitHub.

Almalence has stated that there's challenges keeping it from being released, all of the possible problems are ones that the most dedicated programmers would find solutions for. There are programmers out there who go to the most extreme lengths to make the impossible happen, this release would be for them.

The least I hope for is if the Digital Lens project ever dies without a public release, Almalence releases it as open source software so the VR community can use and maintain it.

It could be a huge development for the Steam Frame if Digital Lens gets a public release. The Steam Frame has eye tracking, and it could be considered an essential add on for it.

This petition is to show Almalence that there's still interest in Digital Lens, and its technology is still desirable.

If Almalence doesn't want to make Digital Lens open source, an alternative solution is allow other companies to license it for a reasonable fee to implement it. The end goal is to get Almalence to give Digital Lens a proper public release.

If Digital Lens gets a paid public release, it should be a one time purchase with indefinite ownership, and not include online DRM of any form. That way it can be used indefinitely.

This is a continuation of my petition from 2024 to get Pimax to add Digital Lens to Pimax Play. I decided to revive it in a new form.
