The issue

In the course of seeking medical attention at hospitals, women, including myself, have experienced what can only be described as a distressing lack of dignity. In Hospital, I have personally been handed a continence aid as a substitute for period products and underwear. This experience left me feeling humiliated and dehumanized. Additionally, as a trauma survivor, when you present to the hospital for other reasons, but your clothes are cut due to medical necessity, it results in feelings of exposure and vulnerability when there is no appropriate substitute to replace them.

Sadly, my story is not an isolated incident. 1 in 10 or 13% of women in hospitals have experienced this. Conversations with other women and dedicated nurses and doctors, have revealed that this is a pervasive issue within our healthcare system. Despite a 2022 directive stating that hospitals in New South Wales are to supply period products, women continue to be underserved, receiving no undergarments when their clothes are cut, or makeshift products like gauzes, continence aids or just being left to bleed through.

This situation is not only undignified, but it risks exacerbating trauma and brings its own set of health risk. Women's health should never be compromised, just like clean sheets and toilet paper are supplied in hospitals this is a critical issue that we need to address head-on.

One solution lies in the "My Monthly Matters Initiative". This initiative proposes the installation of a purpose-made vending machine. This vending machine would ensure constant and easy access to necessary period care products, underwear, etc. for women at any time while in hospital. It is a trauma informed response to providing care to women.

Installing this vending machine would go a long way in restoring dignity to women while safeguarding their health and comfort during hospital visits. It's a practical action NSW government can take to honor the 2022 bulletin's intent. It is time for us to make a change for the betterment of women in healthcare. The costings have been done by the Australian Institute, and it is extremely miniscule in retrospect to the dignity it will provide women.

I urge you to stand with me in calling the NSW government to implement "My Monthly Matters Initiative" or a similar program immediately. Please add your voice and sign this petition to support a dignified healthcare environment for all women. As this is a situation any women can be in. Together, we can ensure that women's basic health needs are met.
