The Issue

When I was 16, I found myself entrapped by the habit of smoking cigarettes. It was not until I turned 18 that I discovered vaping, which transformed my life significantly for the better. The switch from traditional cigarette smoking to vaping saved me from potential years of health complications, greatly improving my quality of life in the process. However, with the introduction of Washington State Senate Bill 5814, which mandates a staggering 95% excise tax on all nicotine products, the cost of maintaining this healthier habit has become prohibitively high.

Implementing such a steep tax has severe consequences not only for consumers like myself but also for the small businesses relying on the sale of vape and nicotine products. These businesses, which once provided an affordable means for smokers to transition to a healthier alternative, now face financial hardship due to reduced consumer purchasing power. Consequently, this legislation indirectly forces individuals to resort back to traditional smoking methods, contradicting public health goals of reducing smoking rates.

According to the American Vaping Association, almost 70% of adult smokers who try to quit every year use a cessation product, with vaping being one of the most common methods. This tax undermines that effort, making it harder for smokers to access affordable and effective alternatives. Moreover, numerous studies, including those published by prominent health organizations, demonstrate the harm-reducing potential of vaping compared to traditional smoking. By imposing such a punitive tax, the state is effectively stripping away the opportunity for people to make healthier choices.

This is why I am urging the Washington State Legislature to reconsider and remove this unjust 95% excise tax on nicotine products. We need a balanced approach that safeguards the rights of consumers and promotes public health without crippling small businesses integral to our communities. We need legislation that considers viable alternatives to high taxation and supports small businesses.

Join me in advocating for the removal of this tax by signing this petition. Together, we can make a difference that protects consumer rights, supports local businesses, and promotes public health.
