Save Berwick-upon-Tweed's Heritage: Stop the Car Park Plan!

The Issue

Once again, Berwick-upon-Tweed's heritage is at risk, and we need you to make a difference! It's hard to believe, but Berwick's most famous view is under attack by the county council, who want to turn a grassy area at the Tweedmouth end of the Old Bridge into a 41-bay car park.

This view has already been compromised by the brash Pets At Home building, but the car park would be immediately adjacent to the Old Bridge, and more likely to be filled with camper vans than being of any use to ordinary Berwick visitors.

In addition to the impairment of views from many angles, the plan involves demolition of Wilson's Workshop, a characterful Victorian building with clapperboards and stone finials. The workshop (above) has a link with William Wilson, a notable architect and stonemason, whose buildings and sculptures adorn Berwick and Spittal. The demolition of this and another contemporary brick building would denude the area and represent a colossal attack on the conservation area.

The public consultation deadline is 18th September, so please add your voice to those condemning this brutal plan. You can read more about it at www.berwick-heritage.co.uk - and listen to our protest song, Wilson's Workshop.

IMPORTANT NOTE to anyone who lives or works in Northumberland, or uses NCC services: we would be very grateful if you could also sign the official NCC petition, which will be considered by the relevant committee. Thank you!
