The topic of whales dying highlights the pressing issue of marine mammal conservation and the threats faced by these majestic creatures. Petitions under this topic address various issues such as ocean pollution, climate change, and commercial whaling that contribute to the decline in whale populations. One petition with thousands of signatures calls for stronger regulations on plastic waste to protect whales from ingesting harmful debris. Another petition raises awareness about the impact of noise pollution on whales communication and navigation abilities.
By exploring these petitions and taking action, individuals can contribute to the protection of whales and their marine habitats. Join the movement to prevent further whale deaths and promote sustainable practices that benefit the ocean ecosystem. Your support can make a difference in ensuring the survival of these iconic marine species.
I was planning a return trip to Moorea this season, but if the humpback whales are not better protected, I will not go.
Implementing a speed limit of 12 knots or less for all large vessels operating JUST within 2 kilometers of Tahiti and Mo'orea for ONLY 5 months, shouldn't be difficult. On top of that- it's just the right thing to do! Please step-up and initiate a vessel speed plan for the protection of these magnificent whales that are especially vulnerable to strikes during their nursing season.
Humans need to step up and be Ambassadors for the natural world that sustains our very lives. Humpback whales are our family. Reduce the ferry speed between Tahiti and Mo’orea during birthing and breeding season. Protect and respect these ancient creatures.
I swam with humpback whales in Rurutu, French Polynesia around 3 weeks before Sweet Girl was hit and killed by a ship going 6 times the illegal speed limit. We nicknamed some of the truly magnificent whales we swam with, "Crazy Baby" and "Cheeky Boy," who were both extremely curious and playful with humans. These interactions changed my life forever, and these beautiful animals deserve better than to be brutally killed by ship strikes. I cannot imagine how I would feel if I heard that either Crazy Baby and his mom or Cheeky Boy were hit by a boat. I would be absolutely DEVASTATED, and it would affect me for the rest of my life. I share my experience in hopes of cultivating more empathy for these beautiful creatures who deserve protection from threats caused by humans. No intelligent creature should suffer at the hands of humans, like Sweet Girl did, especially given her curiosity and willingness to engage with humans. It is just tragic that she died due to human activity.
